Abaya Sizing and Measurement Guide: How to Get the Fit Right

How to measure for an abaya or cape, understand sizing charts, and decide between ready-to-wear and made-to-measure.

Abaya sizing is inconsistent between makers, and the same nominal size can vary by several centimetres. Knowing your own measurements is far more reliable than trusting a size label.

The measurements that matter

  1. Shoulder to hem. Measure from the top of the shoulder straight down to where you want the garment to end. This is the single most important number.
  2. Shoulder width. Across the back, from the point of one shoulder to the other.
  3. Sleeve length. From the shoulder point, along a slightly bent arm, to the wrist.
  4. Bust. Around the fullest point, keeping the tape level.
  5. Hip. Around the fullest point — relevant for fitted and A-line cuts.

How to measure accurately

Choosing your length

The hem should clear the floor by roughly two to three centimetres when you are wearing your usual shoes. Too long and you will step on it repeatedly; too short and it looks unfinished. If you wear both flats and heels, size for the heels and accept a slightly longer look with flats.

Cape sizing

Capes are more forgiving, but shoulder width still matters. A cape cut too wide slides backwards throughout an evening. Check that the shoulder seam — if there is one — sits at your actual shoulder point, and that the neckline closes comfortably without pulling.

When made-to-measure is worth it

If you are notably tall or petite, if you have a significant difference between your bust and hip measurements, or if you are buying for an occasion where fit will be visible in every photograph. Otherwise, ready-to-wear plus a small alteration budget usually gives the better result for the money.

The alterations worth paying for

AlterationDifficultyImpact
Hem lengthEasyVery high
Sleeve lengthEasyHigh
Taking in side seamsModerateModerate
Narrowing the shoulderDifficultHigh but costly
Resizing beaded sectionsVery difficultOften not advisable

Note the last row. Heavily beaded areas are extremely hard to alter without disturbing the pattern — which is why fit should be assessed carefully before buying embellished pieces, rather than assumed fixable afterwards.
